Dotonburi (at Night) (8x10)

Akihabara Restaurant

In September 2023, Michael visited Japan; specifically Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. While there, he painted a watercolor every day for 18 days, capturing the cities, views, and landmarks he encountered.
These paintings were made en plein air, meaning Michael painted directly from what he saw, instead of from reference photos. This approach allowed him to connect with locals and other travelers across cultural and language barriers through art, creating a unique bridge.
Prints of these paintings are available for purchase on his Etsy. Contact Michael directly to inquire about purchasing an original watercolors from this series.

"Each painting tells a unique story of the moment and location they were created in.
For some, my location was tucked away and tranquil, where I was able to paint for as long as I wanted without interruption.
For others, speed was the name of the game for a variety of reasons. Changing weather conditions or lighting sometimes forced me to quit early and finish at my hostel later that night. When I would paint in the streets, I would deep squat and paint while sitting on my heels, forcing me to adapt my technique. For several of the paintings completed near the rivers, the mosquitoes and ants would "encourage" me to paint speedily.
Best of all were the conversations and interactions I had when passers-by would approach to ask about my art, inquire about where I came from, and to let me know how much they appreciate my work."
